Jody Robson is in her twenties and lives with her husband and young sons in Birmingham, UK and suffers from a strange and frightening condition. While she waits for doctors to diagnose her formally, Jody believes that she suffers from Kleine-Levin Syndrome which is a rare brain disorder that causes people to fall asleep for days, even weeks, without waking up.
When she was twelve, Jody had her first experience while visiting a friend’s sleepover. She fell asleep with her friends but only woke up again eight days later. When she finally woke up, she couldn’t remember who or where she was.
Thankfully this forgetfulness was only temporary. The impact this had on her, and her loved ones were understandably frightening and concerning.
Since then, Jody has had over fifty similar episodes resulting in her sleeping through holidays, Christmases, birthdays, and more. During these times, Jody may look awake, but she isn’t mentally present. Sometimes she may even go through the motions, but her family knows she’s not herself. As a result, this puts a strain on her marriage to her husband, Steven.
Of all her sleep episodes, the most extreme time was when she was pregnant. Jody fell asleep the day before going into labor and slept through her first child’s birth. She woke up three weeks later. We can’t begin to imagine how this must have felt for her.
During the times that Jody isn’t asleep, she lives an enjoyable life and has learned to make the most of every waking moment. All this is thanks to a supportive family and friends as well as the support on the Facebook Groups for Kleine-Levin Syndrome.
